FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is gold filled?

Gold filled is composed of a solid layer of gold that is mechanically bonded to a base metal, typically brass or copper. Gold-filled jewelry supplies are regulated by the FTC, and are legally required to be 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. The typical 5% gold alloy used in most gold filled supplies is either 12kt or 14kt.

Is gold filled the same as gold plated?

No, gold filled is different from gold plated in both the amount of gold used, as well as the manufacturing process. Gold filled components are required by the FTC to contain 5% gold alloy. Gold plated components typically contain only 0.05% gold alloy. When creating gold filled components, the gold alloy is layered on top of the base metal and then heated to mechanically bond the gold to its core. When creating gold plated components, an eletric current is used to attract tiny gold ions to the base metal resulting in a very thin layer of gold that sits on top of its core.

Is gold filled durable?

Most high quality gold filled items have a similar appearance to solid gold. With proper care, gold filled items can last a lifetime. To maintain the life of your gold filled jewelry, avoid contact with lotions, perfume, hairspray, or other chemical agents. Also avoid wearing your jewelry while sleeping, swimming or showering. While gold filled jewelry will not tarnish when occasionally exposed to water, repeated and consistent exposure can result in the erosion of the gold alloy over time. After each use, clean with a soft untreated cloth and store in either a pouch or bag to minimize exposure to air. Never scrub your gold filled jewelry using abrasive methods.

Where is your jewelry made?

While I've spent half my life in NYC and half in Northern California, I currently live in the state of Texas, where I craft all of my jewelry. All gold filled chains are manufactured in the US. Stones and crystals are sourced from both domestic and international suppliers. I try my best to source from Fair Trade suppliers, as well as suppliers with traceability.

Do stones and crystals have healing properties?

The collections that I feature are based on certain energies that I'm drawn to at any given time. I know that may sound hokey to some, and I am by no means an expert, but I do believe that there are other forces in this life that can't be proven by our 5 senses. If you came to my site for the purposes of finding something that will meet your healing needs, I recommend cleansing and programming your crystals before use. While crystals have the potential to provide supplemental healing benefits, they should not be used in lieu of proper medical care.

How do you define "vintage"?

While there's debate over the term, I define "vintage" as any component pre-dating the year 2000.

Why are your packaging materials so plain?

I intentionally do not put branding or logos on my packaging so that they can be re-used multiple times. I try to minimize the packaging materials as much as possible without compromising the safetly of your purchase during transport. If you are purchasing multiple pieces and would like a gift box for each, please let me know in the notes section upon checkout.
